The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come and see." John 1:35-39 NRSV
1. If you want to see God in your life the first thing you should do is pray and ask God to show himself to you. This is the Matt 7:7 principle or the Ask, Seek, Knock principle.
Matt 7:7 says, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
I know what you're thinking. "Wait a minute, I have trouble with prayer. I don't hear God. That's why I'm doing this in the first place and yet you tell me to begin with prayer?" Yes. It's ok that you don't hear God yet. He hears you just fine, and he knows your heart. Ask and it will be given to you.
2. Secondly, consider the question Jesus asks when he notices the two have turned their attention to him and are following him. "What are you looking for?" By calling him Rabbi, teacher, it implies the kind of relationship they are looking for. By asking where Jesus was staying, they were asking to learn how he lived. What are you looking for? True purpose and identity? Meaning? Tell God what you really want to know. Ask God to reveal the symbolic language He uses with you.
3. Come and see! Look into the bible, His Word. Seek answers and explanation at a place of worship. Contact a pastor or spiritual director who can help you see God in your life. Sit outside and open your senses. Sit at a traffic light and look around. Keep looking. God will show up.
"They came and saw..." John 1:39b
